It was a quiet, midweek evening somewhere between 2012 and 2013. The relentless Melbourne summer and my tiny, third-floor apartment free of air-conditioning had called for two beers. Whilst nursing my second in bed, I chatted to my friend Kieran on Facebook about how I wanted to return to the Land of the Rising Sun. He said something to the effect of "then do it" and next thing you know that Commonwealth Bank Student Credit account of mine was maxed out once more. My first overseas trip alone, I will never forget the moment my mother called in at my place 3 hours before my flight in the middle of a particularly rampant sex scene in an episode of Girls (it was a simpler time, remember) demanding my housemate to witness a will she had drafted up swearing all my belongings to her while telling me I would "probably need it". My travels took me from Tokyo to Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nagoya and Nakano and from them bloomed my passion for documentary photography abroad.
